A split occurred due to the windy conditions at about 60 km to go with Lance Armstrong, Alberto Contador and Fabian Cancellara in the front group. And they are catching up to the six breakaway riders who are now only 1:17 ahead.
Cadel Evans of Silence Lotto also made it in the front group, with four other members of his team.
But Silence Lotto has not done very much work to move the pace of the peleton, that job having been picked up mostly by Columbia HTC, Saxo Bank, and Astana.
Robert Gesink of Rabo Bank crashed and is in the second chase group, which at this time is closing in on the first peleton chase group. It's more bad luck for the team as their leader, Denis Menchov crashed yesterday in the team time trial.
As the riders get closer to the end--only 27 miles away now--will Cavendish still have a chance to win a third stage in this 2009 Tour?
